Frequently Asked Questions

What does Cub Scouting offer my child?
Cub Scouts teaches our boys and girls strong character, values, good citizenship, and responsibility while having a lot of fun along the way.  Scouting provides a great opportunity for your child to interact with others their age and you and your child to do many fun activities together, including camping.

What is the time commitment for Cub Scouts?
Scouts of Pack 36 meet 3-4 times a month during the school year and once a month during the summer months. The average Pack/Den Meeting lasts about an hour. The typical Den/Pack Activity can last anywhere from 2 hours long to overnight.

What are the responsibilities of a parent?

  • Provide help and support for the den and pack.
  • Work with your scout on advancement projects and activities.
  • Attend pack meetings with your scout.
  • Attend and assist with den outings.
  • Attend Cub Scout Family campouts with your scout.

Do Cub Scouts go camping?
Yes. We offer camping opportunities for the Cub Scouts and their families. That can range from our Pack 2-Day Fall Campout to a 4-Day Summer Camp to an overnighter at a museum.

How much is it going to cost?
The annual Pack 36 dues covers such items as the National registration fee, District insurance, the handbook appropriate for your scouts rank, the pinewood derby kits, and all patches and awards for the year.

Other costs (not included in the Pack 36 dues) include costs for uniforms and summer camping fees. Scouts participate in one fund-raising activity (popcorn sales), which helps to cover Den supplies, equipment, and other activities.

When does my scout need to wear a uniform?
Scouts should attend Pack and Den Meetings in full uniform, and can wear the uniform at school on days when they have Pack and Den Meetings.  Scouts also wear their uniforms to our Pack service projects like: Lions Club Pancake Breakfast and Bingo with the Senior Center.

Where can I buy the uniform, neckerchief, patches, hat, vest and belt?
The Des Plaines Valley Scout Shop
811 West Hillgrove Avenue
La Grange, IL 60525
(708) 352-3144

What are the age requirements to join Cub Scouts?
Lions (entering Kindergarten or age 6), Tiger Cubs (entering first grade or age 7), Cub Scouts (entering second or third grade, or age 8 or 9), Webelos Scouts (entering fourth or fifth grade, or age 10).

How can I learn more?
The best way to learn about what a Cub Scout really does is to talk with a Cub Scout who is engaged in the program. Alternatively, you can learn more about the Cub Scout program by emailing our Cubmaster, Chris Mezzo.
